Stefano Domenicali says the British Grand Prix next month will decide whether or not the team continue to push for the 2011 title, or switch their focus to 2012.
Ferrari haven’t had their best start to a season after failing to make it onto the podium until round four in Turkey with Fernando Alonso’s third place finish.
They currently lag title leaders Red Bull by 154 points, and McLaren by 85, in the constructors’ championship. Many, including Flavio Briatore have urged the team to concentrate on next year as he believes the Milton Keynes based outift have wrapped up both titles already.
Domenicali though says the team will decide their 2011 fate after Silverstone.
“Ferrari is at a crucial moment of the season,” he told the Die Welt newspaper. “In the next races until after the British Grand Prix we will decide whether we continue to push for the world title or work toward the next season.”
Why the British GP? It near enough marks the middle of the season, but the biggest reason is down to the twist in the regulations which Domenicali believes could spark a second championship battle, as Red Bull are set to be most effected by the exhaust blown-diffuser ban.
“We need to see in Silverstone, what is the real effect of this change in the regulations with regard to the effect of the exhaust,” he said.
“Then, we will see really where is the second championship in terms of the level of performance above all in higher downforce tracks.”
