Sergio Perez will spend race day in hospital after a heavy crash during qualifying on Saturday in Monaco.
The Sauber driver had an unfortunate crash after he lost control exiting the Tunnel, partly down to the fact he was well off the racing line.
His car hit the barrier to his right and continued toward the protective padding at exit of the Nouvelle Chicane. The impact was very intense, resulting in minor concussion but, thankfully, the injuries he sustained were nothing more than a sprained thigh.
The FIA confirmed that he was talking and was aware as he was driven to the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco, where he will now stay for a second day as further tests are conducted.
According to his doctor, the Mexican rookie is keen to compete in today’s race, but on safety grounds he will not be allowed, not by his doctors, the FIA nor the Sauber team.
The 21-year-old watched Saturday’s GP2 race from his hospital bed and will likely do the same for today’s Formula 1 race.
