The Canadian Grand Prix will be the first race to feature two drag-reduction (DRS) zones, the FIA’s Charlie Whiting has confirmed
Whilst in essence it will be one zone, separated by the turn 12 chicane, drivers will be allowed to activate their wing twice.
The detection zone will be placed just after turn ten, before the cars can activate their wing exiting turn 11 which quickly follows ten and is only a minor kink, before it closes automatically when they brake for turn 12.
They can then reactivate it as they exit turn 12, crossing the start/finish line up to turn one, giving them a second chance to pass.
“The DRS zone will be on the last straight and the pits straight,” Whiting confirmed to Autosport.
“There will be one detection zone. The initial detection will be after Turn 10, then they can have another go [on the main straight].”
The race will be the first to have two activation zones, but it won’t be the last, as the FIA have also confirmed that the European round, in Valencia, will also have two.
These will be between turns ten to 12 and 14 to 17.
