Sepang International Racing team boss Razlan Razali has reiterated his desire to bring factory Yamaha refugee Valentino Rossi into the squad for 2021.
The Malaysian confirmed in an interview with MotoGP.com that talks were ongoing with Yamaha as far as the specification of M1 that the Italian would compete with should he make the switch to the Yamaha satellite outfit, as well as the costs that go with such a switch.
Razali revealed that SIC were yet to have a formal meeting with Rossi about the move though, and that nothing would be decided until such a meeting takes place, although conceded the second rider needed to be signed up by August at the latest.
“The idea of Valentino coming to us gets better and better as we go along,” said Razali.
“For the team it’s important to have stability in terms of performance, of course we want to retain Frankie (Morbidelli) and that will provide that, so Valentino can provide guidance not just for the team but also for Frankie.”
Rossi was left out in the cold after being replaced by incumbent SIC man Fabio Quartararo, who stunned the MotoGP world with a blistering rookie campaign last year that saw the Frenchman take six pole positions and seven podium finishes.
Razali reckoned Rossi making the jump to his team would provide a “great story” for both the outfit and Rossi himself.
“It can also provide a great story for the team as well, and is great for Valentino as it would be a shame for him to retire in this situation (Covid-19), so we could provide that platform for him (to continue),” he said.
Razali reiterated his support for current pilot Franco Morbidelli, stating that the ’18 Moto2 world champion would be the teams “main rider” for next season, even if Rossi joins the team alongside his VR46 academy member.
“For us next year the rider with the highest priority for us is Frankie Morbdielli. I think we need to do the best we can and provide whatever he needs, he is our first priority.
“Even if Vale (Rossi) comes in, should it happen, Frankie is our main rider for 2021.”
