Virgin Racing driver Jerome d’Ambrosio could lose his seat at the team within a handful of races if his sponsors don’t pay up, according to sources within his home country of Belgium.
It has been reported that his sponsors have failed to make payment to the Virgin outfit to the tune of roughly £4.5 million (€5m).
His manager, Eric Boullier, also team principal of the Renault team, has confirmed that he will fly to Belgium later this week in an attempt to resolve the matter.
“I will go to Belgium on Thursday,” Boullier told Nieuwsblad. “This can’t go on any longer. Anything saying that Jerome’s sponsors have paid-up isn’t true. Everything is stuck,” he explained.
“I recently spoke with the people at Virgin and they are starting to get impatient. They have clearly told me that, if there is no change in the situation, they will consider replacing Jerome.”
The lead candidate to replace the 25-year-old is Canadian Robert Wickens, currently competing in GP3. The 22-year-old is backed by Marussia, which acquired a substantial stake in Virgin earlier this year.
