The 2020 MotoGP season looks set to finally get underway at Jerez on the July 19.

The latest campaign of the premier class has yet to begin as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, while the Moto2 and Moto3 classes were able to host their respective opening rounds at Qatar by virtue of having travelled there for a test a week earlier than the MotoGP squads were due to arrive.

With the vast part of the world enforcing differing levels of lockdown, most of the schedule has either been cancelled or postponed until the situation improves sufficiently.

The ’20 editions of the German, Dutch and Finnish grands prix were canned completely earlier this week, with the Czech GP at Brno thought to be favourite to host the season opener in early August.

Red Bull-owned publication Speedweek reports that plans are in motion for Jerez in Spain to hold MotoGP’s curtain-raiser in mid-July, likely without fans in a similar vein to Formula 1’s planned return to racing at the Red Bull Ring shortly prior to the MotoGP event.

Most of the grand prix racing paddock’s racing equipment has also reportedly been flown back from Qatar to be stored in Spain ready for the Jerez event.

MotoE racing will likely not be held for the foreseeable future as Dorna focuses on trying to keep staff numbers at each event to a minimum.
