The FIA has approved the ‘general principles’ of a convergence platform between WEC and IMSA following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Geneva, forming the basis of the top prototype class in endurance racing.

“The platform will maintain the existing FIA WEC Technical Regulations, including the Le Mans Hypercar. The Le Mans Hypercar and LMDh cars would be brought together under a single and unique FIA WEC top category,” the FIA wrote in a statement. “The LMDh cars would be based on a new chassis, common to both WEC and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship top class.”

The FIA also stated that ‘parameters such as power unit performance, aerodynamic characteristics and weight will be aligned for both the Le Mans Hypercars and the LMDh cars in order to ensure both will operate in the same performance window.’

This could result in regulation changes for the Le Mans Hypercar class, which is supposed to debut at the first round of the 2020/21 FIA WEC season later this year. Further details on the LMDh category will be revealed during the Super Sebring event by the ACO and IMSA in a few weeks.
