Hamilton: We’ll push very hard before Melbourne

Wet weather in Barcelona forced McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton to conduct some short, low speed runs during the final days testing before the season starts in a fortnight.

The 2008 world champion was happy with the distance covered despite the dangerous conditions.

“We tested a couple of things during some shorter runs, but it was very dangerous out there: very slippery and lots of aquaplaning,” he said. “This definitely isn’t normal Spanish weather!

“We learnt a bit about the Pirelli Intermediates and Extremes, but there was so much aquaplaning that it was a bit too risky to do longer runs.”

The Brit isn’t downbeat on his chances at securing a second world championship crown, even though the MP4-26 has suffered from reliability issues and is yet to top the times.

Hamilton is confident upgrades and hardwork before Melbourne will help them catch the leaders, thought to be Red Bull and Ferrari.

“As for the world championship, I’m excited – we’ve got a long season ahead of us. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we have more updates coming for Melbourne.

“The championship is open, and we don’t know what to expect. Our whole team will be pushing very, very hard.”
