Renault-backed Max Fewtrell will remain in the FIA Formula 3 Championship this year, switching to Hitech Grand Prix.

The 20-year-old stepped up to the category after taking the Formula Renault Eurocup title in 2018, and scored two podiums en route to 10th in the standings with ART.

Fewtrell, a Renault junior since 2017, is Hitech’s first signing for the new season.

“I’m really excited for this year because last season wasn’t really representative of my ability and that hurt a bit deep down,” Fewtrell added.

“This year I want to prove to everyone what I can do, get some great results and go for the title. That’s the only goal this year: I want to win the championship.

“I’m with a British team this year with Hitech and last time I drove for a British team I won a title.

“The team has been great, I worked with them in Macau and being based in the UK makes things a bit easier.

“We’re getting along well, and we can’t wait for the season to get underway. We have to be physically ready for the first race in Bahrain, so winter training is busy.”Fewtrell is one of six members of Renault’s driver scheme and last year gained his first experience in Formula 1 machinery, undertaking private running in a 2017-spec car.

“The Renault Sport Academy has helped me massively and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” the new Hitech driver said.

“It’s nice to continue this year and it’s really motivating that they still have the belief in me after a bit of a rough year in 2019.

“That said, I think it was tough for everyone in the Academy in general with the results and with the loss of Anthoine [Hubert]. I learnt a lot and we can go into this season aiming to get back on top.

“It’s great supporting the F1 team and being given the opportunity to drive an F1 car last year was a dream come true. It’s nice to do that as work and something serious. I want to keep it going and help the F1 team as much as I can off track while they are at the races and being a helpful asset to them.”
