With 12 hours gone in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Loic Duval currently leads proceedings in the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-VR after the leading Mazda was handed a penalty for passing cars under a local yellow flag.
That yellow flag turned into a full course caution when the #19 GEAR Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo of ex-F2 driver Tatiana Calderon lost fuel pressure and got stranded on track. Duval has since taken he lead of the race of the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac at the hands of Ryan Briscoe and the #31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac of Filipe Albuquerque.
Pla has since taken over the #77 from Nunez and is on a charge towards the front, passing team-mate Ryan Hunter-Reay for fifth place shortly before the halfway mark.
In LMP2, Ben Hanley in the #81 ORECA 07-Gibson rocketed into the class lead, speeding ahead of the #52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA after it had enjoyed eight hours of dominance.
Shortly after, Dragonspeed swapped Hanley for bronze-rated Henrik Hedman, who was subsequently hunted down and passed by WEC LMP2 regular Gabriel Aubry, with the #52 now leading again at the hands of Nick Boulle. Third place is occupied by Ryan Lewis in the #18 Era Motorsport ORECA, who is several laps behind the class leader.
The #4 Corvette C8.R suffered mechanical trouble during the new car’s racing debut. Over nine hours into the race, an oil leak sent the car to the garage. The lead battle in GTLM continues to rage between Porsche and BMW, with the #24 BMW M8 GTE of John Edwards leading both Porsche 911 RSR-19s.
GTD also continues to be very competitive with the #48 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 and the #9 Porsche 911 GT3 R taking turns leading for a good portion of the night. The Porsche had a minor fuel filling issue during one of their pit stops dropping them to tenth in class. Bryan Sellers in the #48 Lamborghini currently leads the class holding onto an eight second lead over Mirko Bortolotti in the #88 Audi R8 LMS GT3 and Toni Vilander in the #63 Ferrari 488 GT3.
Aston Martin has retired fully from the GTD category, with the #23 Heart of Racing machine crashing out shortly after the four-hour mark, and the #98 Aston Martin Racing entry retiring due to the damage suffered by a coming together with the #3 Corvette C8.R into turn one.
