Marco Bezzecchi obliterated the lap record of the Lusail International Circuit as he claimed pole position for the Qatar MotoGP race.
Bezzecchi started with a flying lap that was almost four tenths faster than the previous best lap, which saw him claim top spot over Marc Marquez, which puts the Ducati rider in a prime position to seal the title over the weekend.
Marquez set the initial pace before Bezzecchi responded by obliterating the existing lap record, with the battle for pole firmly fixed between the Aprilia and Ducati riders.
Although there were plenty of improvements throughout sectors on the final flying runs, no one was able to keep a consistent rhythm around the Lusail circuit.
It meant Bezzecchi claimed his first pole position since Misano in emphatic fashion, sealing the lap record with his 1:50.028s lap time.
Marquez clinched second place, knowing that he needed to outscore Jorge Martin by 30-points and Bezzecchi by just eight.
Fabio Di Giannantonio posted a final flying lap to round out the front row in third place, bumping Raul Fernandez down to the second row.
Francesco Bagnaia took fifth, sandwiched between the two Trackhouse riders as Ai Ogura finished sixth, while Johann Zarco was seventh.
Pedro Acosta progressed through Q1 and preserved his 61-race streak of outqualifying his teammates in eighth, with Fermin Aldeguer ninth and Enea Bastianini rounding out the top 10.
Martin was potentially riding over the limit due to the pain barrier from his injury and could only qualify 11th, meanwhile Brad Binder crashed on his first lap and ended 12th.
Franco Morbidelli missed out on a Q2 spot by just over a tenth of a second, and headed the fifth row of the grid in 13th.
Luca Marini struggled throughout qualifying but took 14th ahead of 15th-placed Iker Lecuona who continued deputising at Gresini, this time for Alex Marquez.
Diogo Moreira took 16th in qualifying and was narrowly ahead of Jake Dixon, who was confirmed as a stand-in after Joan Mir suffered a recurrence of his fatigue issues.
Maverick Vinales completed the standings of the truncated grid in 18th.
