As MotoGP stops in Qatar for Round 20, Marc Marquez holds his first match point of the 2026 campaign, putting him on the brink of a tenth World Championship, his eighth in the premier class. Here is how he can wrap up the title this weekend.
After Jorge Martin’s crash and subsequent right radius fracture in the Phillip Island Sprint, Marquez seized the championship lead. He extended that advantage further when the Aprilia rider withdrew in Malaysia prior to Qualifying due to his injured arm.
Following a solid second-place finish in the Sepang Sprint and victory in the main race, Marquez then brought his total to 399 points.
Heading into the Qatar GP with 111 points available before the end of the 2026 campaign, Marc Marquez therefore leads Jorge Martin by 44 points, Marco Bezzecchi by 67, and Pedro Acosta by 104.
While his eighth premier-class title is within reach on Sunday, the Spaniard needs near-perfection in Qatar alongside setbacks for his remaining title rivals to seal the crown in Lusail. With Martin attempting his racing return in Lusail, Marquez must outscore the Spaniard by 30 points and extend his lead over Bezzecchi by 8 points (or 7 if Marquez wins the main race) to wrap up the crown early and surpass the record he shares with Valentino Rossi.
Marc Marquez crowned champion in Qatar if…
To wrap up his 10th World Championship in Qatar, Marc Marquez needs one of the following Sprint and Grand Prix combinations to go his way:
- If Marquez wins the Sprint and wins the Grand Prix, he will be crowned champion if Jorge Martin scores a maximum of 7 points, regardless of Bezzecchi’s results.
- If Marquez wins the Sprint and finishes 2nd in the Grand Prix, Martin must score a maximum of 2 points and Bezzecchi can score a maximum of 24 points.
- If Marquez finishes 2nd in the Sprint and wins the Grand Prix, Martin must score a maximum of 4 points and Bezzecchi can score a maximum of 27 points.
- If Marquez finishes 3rd in the Sprint and wins the Grand Prix, Martin must score a maximum of 2 points and Bezzecchi can score a maximum of 25 points.
- If Marquez finishes 4th in the Sprint and wins the Grand Prix, Martin must score a maximum of 1 point and Bezzecchi can score a maximum of 24 points.
- If Marquez finishes 5th in the Sprint and wins the Grand Prix, Martin must not score any points and Bezzecchi can score a maximum of 23 points.
- If Marquez finishes 6th or worse in the Sprint, regardless of his Grand Prix result, he will not gain enough of a lead to wrap up the title this weekend.
- If Marquez finishes 3rd or lower on Sunday, it guarantees the title fight continues to the following round in Portimao.
Under all circumstances, no title celebrations will take place on Saturday. To seal the World Championship on Sunday, Marquez must depart Lusail with a 74-point cushion over Martin and Acosta as well as a 75-point advantage over Bezzecchi (or 74 on countback on Bezzecchi if Marquez wins the Grand Prix). Should he pull off the feat and secure the crown this weekend, it would complete a monumental turnaround, having erased a 102-point deficit since Mugello back in May.
