Postponed due to a regional conflict, the Qatar GP hosts Round 20 of the 2026 MotoGP season, where Marc Marquez holds his first chance to secure a 10th World Championship.
Three rounds, four riders in contention, and one title to be decided; this is the state of MotoGP ahead of the Qatar GP at Lusail. This fight for the crown takes place against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions that have hit the region since March 2026. The conflict has caused significant unrest in the paddock, leaving at least four riders absent from the grid this weekend, with further participation subject to impending medical checks.
Originally scheduled for April, the Qatar round was postponed to November due to regional instability. This weekend’s event marks the 20th edition of the Qatar night race at Lusail, serving as Round 20 of the 2026 MotoGP season.
Marc Marquez’s first match point
Following his victory in Sepang during Jorge Martin’s absence, championship leader Marc Marquez heads to Qatar, holding a 44-point lead over his Spanish rival, while Marco Bezzecchi trails by 67 points and final contender Pedro Acosta by 104.
Martin’s attempt to race just six days after sustaining a right radius fracture proved short-lived; he withdrew from the Malaysian GP after FP2, leaving an open goal for Marquez to capitalise on, which he did by securing second on Saturday and victory in the main race.
Marco Bezzecchi, however, was unable to maximise the opportunity. Conceding 17 points to Marquez across the weekend, the Italian managed only a modest sixth place in Sunday’s main race at Sepang, after a third position in the Sprint.
In Lusail, Martin will attempt to return following an additional few days of recovery to keep his championship hopes alive. Nevertheless, Marquez holds his first match point of the season.
A two-time winner at the track, Marquez can seal his tenth World Championship this weekend. To do so, he must outscore Martin by 30 points across the weekend while securing 8 points more than Bezzecchi, or only 7 points more if Marquez takes victory on Sunday.
With only two P3 finishes (2021 and 2024) on his Qatari résumé, Martin faces a statistical disadvantage against Marquez in Lusail, while Bezzecchi’s record is even more challenging, with a best result of P9 coming in 2025.
Ducati vs Aprilia
In the midst of a tight battle for the top spot, Ducati and Aprilia arrive on even ground in Lusail. With long main straights and heavy braking zones, Ducati holds an edge over Aprilia, who can reciprocate in the fast, flowing corners of the Qatar circuit. Fluctuating night temperatures, changing grip levels, and thermal tyre management will heavily influence the race outcome.
Yamaha absent from Qatar GP
Regardless of the title fight, the grid will be thinner this weekend. Yamaha, the most successful manufacturer in Lusail history with 10 victories, announced a total boycott of the event due to “company-wide travel policy restrictions”. As a result, factory Yamaha riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins, as well as Pramac entry Jack Miller and replacement rider Augusto Fernandez, will all be absent. A victory for Ducati (9 wins) this Sunday would therefore tie Yamaha’s record of 10 wins at the circuit.
Rider substitutions continue elsewhere on the grid. At Honda HRC, Jake Dixon steps in for Joan Mir after the team exhausted alternate replacement options following injuries to Takaaki Nakagami and Aleix Espargaro. The 30-year-old WorldSBK rider makes his first Grand Prix appearance of the year after seven seasons in Moto2, as Joan Mir recovers following his withdrawal from the race in Malaysia on Sunday, where he had returned after a four GP-long absence.
At Gresini, Alex Marquez is recovering from planned surgery to address persistent shoulder blade inflammation caused by hardware installed following his Barcelona crash. Iker Lecuona takes his place alongside Fermin Aldeguer, who has been cleared for FP1. Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez has been cleared to return after missing Malaysia with a finger injury, joining a cleared Jorge Martin on track in Qatar.
