Yamaha and Xavi Vierge will officially part ways at the end of the 2026 WorldSBK season, opening the door for Jack Miller to potentially replace the Spaniard at Pata Maxus Yamaha.
After just one season with the Japanese manufacturer, Vierge’s contract will expire at the end of the current campaign. The announcement comes as the 29-year-old continues to struggle with a challenging Yamaha YZF-R1, currently sitting 13th in the championship standings with top finishes of sixth place at Assen and Portimão.
WorldSBK grid shakeup: Miller in, Vierge to Ducati?
The move comes amid a major reshuffle across the WorldSBK grid, with a game of musical chairs sparked by up to four current MotoGP riders targeting moves to the series. Current Prima Pramac Yamaha rider Jack Miller is heavily tipped to take over Vierge’s seat for 2027.
Despite losing his factory Yamaha drive, Vierge’s time in WorldSBK appears far from over. The Spaniard is rumoured to be in pole position to replace compatriot Álvaro Bautista at Barni Spark Racing to race a Ducati Panigale V4R.
Yamaha praises Vierge’s dedication amid hardships
Though the YZF-R1 has proven difficult to manage this season, Vierge’s relentless efforts have not gone unnoticed within the Yamaha camp.
“Xavi has shown incredible professionalism and determination throughout 2026, and we’re very grateful for everything he has brought to the project and for all his hard work this season,” said Niccolò Canepa, Road Racing Sporting Manager at Yamaha Motor Europe
“It’s no secret that we have had a challenging year, but Xavi has always been a great person to have in the project and a real pleasure to work with. We are sad to see him go but would like to thank him for his commitment and wish him the very best for the future.”
Vierge’s upbeat personality and tireless work ethic have drawn praise across the paddock throughout his career, traits echoed by his team management.
“For me personally, and I know without doubt that I can speak for every single person within the team, it is with huge regret that we are unable to continue with Xavi into the 2027 season,” insisted his Pata Maxus Yamaha Team Principal, Paul Denning.
“His quick adaptation to the R1 plus his raw speed, bravery and technical clarity mean that we will miss a superb rider but also a very special person. It’s rare that somebody is so well liked and so deeply respected by everyone he comes into contact with, but Xavi has an exceptional level of professionalism, honesty and respect towards his work and the people around him.
“We genuinely wish him all the positive things that he deserves and assure Xavi that the team’s door will always be open for any future opportunities. Vamos Xavi, and thank you.”
