Pirelli will become the sole tyre supplier to the World Rally Championship from 2021 onwards, the FIA has announced.

The Italian company has a long history in the WRC having been involved since 1973. It will now supply all tyres for the Rally1 (WRC) and Rally2 (R5 Class) cars including WRC 2 and WRC 3 until at least 2024.

The F1 tyre supplier will take over from Michelin, which alongside MRF and Hankook, all submitted applications to tender for the exclusive supply deal.

Pirelli's long history in WRC has seen it amass 181 wins and 25 world titles with some of the most successful teams and drivers in the sport. After a break in 2017, the Italian firm returned in 2018 and is already the exclusive tyre supplier for the Junior World Rally Championship.

Its last season as exclusive supplier was 2010, when its rubber carried Sébastien Loeb and Citroën to world titles.

"This is an exciting new phase in the development of the World Rally Championship and we are happy to announce Pirelli as our exclusive single tyre supplier for a period of four years from 2021," commented FIA rally director Yves Matton.

"I am convinced Pirelli will bring a wealth of experience to the program."
