Marco Bezzecchi set the first-ever sub-1:45.000s lap time as he clinched pole position for the MotoGP Aragon Grand Prix.
Bezzecchi overcame an intense battle with Marc Marquez for pole position – setting an all-time lap record with 1:44.962s.
Marquez started the session strongly, breaking the lap record on his first attempt, before being displaced by Bezzecchi at the top with a record of his own.
Bezzecchi continued his momentum and eventually broke the record once more, putting him on course for a third pole of the season.
Marquez made a couple of mistakes on his final two laps, but was blocked by Franco Morbidelli on his last attempt which scuppered his chances and gave pole position to Bezzecchi.
Marquez instead settled for second place, while Alex Marquez joined the pair on the front row.
Raul Fernandez headed the second row of the grid after qualifying fourth, with Jorge Martin fifth and Pedro Acosta sixth despite a late crash.
Fabio Di Giannantonio’s best time put him seventh ahead of Francesco Bagnaia, who progressed from Q1 to qualify eighth.
Johann Zarco finished ninth on his return to action after three months out with a leg injury, with Diogo Moreira completing the top 10 after he also came through Q1.
Fermin Aldeguer took 11th, as Morbidelli was 12th after his controversial end to qualifying.
Jack Miller missed out on a Q2 spot and headed the fifth row in 13th, joined by 14th-placed Brad Binder and Joan Mir in 15th.
Enea Bastianini could only manage 16th, as Fabio Quartararo’s final lap put him 17th ahead of Luca Marini in 18th.
Alex Rins took the chequered flag in 19th, as Pol Espargaro continued his stand-in appearances for the injured Maverick Vinales in 20th ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu in 21st.
Lorenzo Savadori rounded out the standings in 22nd, replacing Ai Ogura at Trackhouse after the Japanese rider was ruled out with a broken left hand.
