Anthony Davidson praised the qualifying performance of his team-mate Roberto Gonzalez after the pair qualified fourth in the LMP2 class for the Bapco 8 Hours of Bahrain.
Davidson and Gonzalez shared driving duties on board the #38 JOTA ORECA 07-Gibson and came in fourth behind United Autosports, Jackie Chan DC Racing and G-Drive Racing. Speaking to Motorsport Week after the session, the Briton explained how content he was with the results.
I really enjoyed driving the car just now," Davidson said. "I did the best I could after Roberto had driven. I would say we’re the best true silver driver pairing on the grid in P4. You know, the rest of the silvers ahead of us are young lads that have done GP3 or whatever.
Some drivers there have even turned gold during this season which, luckily for them, continues into next year but is still part of this season of WEC. So I’m really proud of what Roberto did to get an average time for us to get P4. We couldn’t realistically hope for any more than that."
The JOTA crew comes into Bahrain off the back of their victory in last month's 4 Hours of Shanghai. Despite the longer race and different conditions, Davidson explained the team's approach to the longer round of the championship has not changed.
We just said before this weekend, we said ‘look, let’s do our thing.’ That’s what we did in China." the 2014 WEC champion explained. "We just did our thing. No mistakes. Don’t touch any other cars, don’t mess up pitstops.
Always make sure that you’re doing everything right without any mistakes, and then you will be on the podium. In a race like this, you’ll get a guaranteed podium. No lockups causing flat spots.
We’re so limited on tyres and it’s such an aggressive track on tyres, it’s all gonna be about who gets the second stint perfect tomorrow. Double stinting those tyres is going to be a real challenge."
