Anthony Davidson reinvigorated by LMP2 after ‘sour end’ with Toyota

Anthony Davidson says he feels reinvigorated by life in the FIA World Endurance Championshop's LMP2 class after a disappointing end to his stint with Toyota Gazoo Racing.

Speaking to Motorsport Week at last week's FIA Hall of Fame ceremony, the 2014 world champion admitted his stint with Toyota, which lasted from 2012 to 2017, turned sour towards the end, although not from the manufacturer's side.

In his time with Toyota, Davidson won the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2014 and scored a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but admits he didn't end his time there on a high note and now feels right at home with JOTA ahead of the Bapco 8 Hours of Bahrain.

"I can’t wait! I can’t wait for it. I mean, I’m having such fun in LMP2," Davidson said about the upcoming round of the championship. "It’s a breath of fresh air after my time at the end of Toyota when it was turning a little bit sour, if I’m honest. Not from their side, but mostly from my side."

Davidson was replaced in the #8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid by the then incoming double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso, and hasn't raced for the team since. Instead, he turned his focus to LMP2, contesting the 2018/19 Super Season with DragonSpeed.

During that season, he became an outside championship contender after a victory in the chaotic 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps last May. He then jumped ship to JOTA for the current season, where he took a race win in Shanghai alongside Roberto Gonzalez and Antonio Felix da Costa.

"And to do LMP2 is a real breath of fresh air and I’m loving racing again," he continued. "I’m performing at my absolute best, Shanghai was proof of that with the dominant win we had and Bahrain’s always been a circuit I enjoyed in any category I raced there, sportscars or Formula One,

I’ve always gone well there, always liked the circuit. So I’m really looking forward to driving round that track again and competing in a category where everyone’s in the same car, pretty much and just getting the best out of myself and the whole team, that’s what it’s all about in sportscars."
