Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari decision ‘a very personal’ one – Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso has given his verdict on speculation that Lewis Hamilton is mulling a switch to Ferrari for the 2021 season.

The Spaniard, who switched from Renault to Ferrari in 2010 where he spent five seasons, believes the decision will be "a very personal" one given Hamilton's current position.

Hamilton secured a sixth championship this season, which is his fifth with the Mercedes works team, whilst all have been powered by Mercedes following his debut title in 2008 with McLaren.

But with Mercedes parent company Daimler AG yet to confirm its plans post-2020 and rumours team boss Toto Wolff could leave for a senior position within Formula 1, it's believed Hamilton is considering his own future with reports he has already met with Ferrari president John Elkann.

When asked about the move, Alonso said: "I think it’s also a very personal answer," he told Channel 4.

"He has to consider all the possible situations and ingredients in the mix and make the decision. I think it is very personal."

Asked what he would do in such a position, Alonso added: "I don’t know… I think there will probably be some loyalty in place with Mercedes as well for all the achievements they’ve had together.

"Also I don’t know what Mercedes are thinking as well for 2021."

Alonso was then asked about Hamilton's achievements in the sport and the comparisons to Michael Schumacher, whose record of seven titles he could match next year.

"It’s amazing what he is doing in F1 right now. The combination between himself and the team is very dominant.

"I think this championship was quite difficult for him. Ferrari was strong and so too were Red Bull for some parts of the season.

"I think it’s difficult to say [whether he is better than Schumacher]. I think Lewis is at the same level at least."
