The battle for the Formula 2 title has been tight, with 22 points separating the top three and five rounds to go; the fight continues.
In a championship where the margins are narrow and the on-track action can be unpredictable, consistency is crucial. Going into the summer break, there are several F2 drivers who have strong momentum, but only one can drive away with the championship title.
The top three drivers in the standings after nine rounds are Nikola Tsolov, Gabriele Mini, and Rafa Camara. While Mini is a familiar face in Formula 2, both Tsolov and Camara are new additions to the championship.
The two battled hard for the Formula 3 title last year, with Camara storming to victory in the end. Now, they are fighting on track again, but this time a step up and with more drivers in the mix.
The top contenders of the F2 season
The first race weekend of the season in Melbourne saw both Camara and Tsolov hit the ground running with podiums. Tsolov entered F2 and immediately took charge as he finished the Feature Race in the opening round on the top step of the podium. With this immediate victory, he began the season by leading the Drivers’ Championship.
The next two rounds were a new playing field for the drivers as it was the first time F2 raced in North America. The Miami weekend once again saw the Bulgarian on the top step of the podium, this time for the Sprint Race. While it was only the second round, Tsolov already had strong momentum from the podium finishes.
Gabriele Mini entered the battle in Miami as he snatched his maiden F2 victory in the frantic Feature Race.
Mini might have been more of an unpredictable contender; however, his consistency and determination with another podium in Canada quickly showed that he was stepping up to the challenge. The F2 Championship had a new leader as he outbested both Camara and Tsolov.
Camara was always lurking closely behind as he sealed another podium finish in the Miami Feature Race. Already at the British Grand Prix, the Brazilian secured his third pole position.
While both his rivals had already taken their maiden victories early on, Camara was still waiting for his chance to stand on the top step. When the Barcelona weekend came around, the F3 champion went on to secure his maiden F2 victory in the Feature Race.
Momentum swings
The battle for the championship was somewhat of a rollercoaster for all three, as each had experienced bad luck, impulsive decisions that led to a low finish, and reliability issues.
The momentum continued to swing in each of their favour, and after the Barcelona round, the Bulgarian had momentum on his side. With three consecutive victories in the Spielberg Feature and Silverstone weekend, Tsolov made history as the first F2 driver to win three consecutive races. Additionally, the Red Bull junior was back on top of the Standings.
The last two rounds before the summer break saw Camara seal another win at Spa-Francorchamps, and yet another podium in Budapest. Meanwhile, Mini took his second victory in the Sprint Race in Budapest, while Tsolov finished last of the three. Despite his struggles, he remained the championship leader going into the summer break.
While other drivers such as Alex Dunne and Noel Leon have also had a promising season, the top three still lie ahead of the rest of the pack.
Return from summer break
Heading into the summer break, Tsolov once again leads the championship, sitting 20 points ahead of Mini and 22 points ahead of Camara. Despite his lead, F2 always has a quick turnaround. With both Mini and Camara demonstrating steady consistency throughout the season, the fight could go three ways.
Nine rounds have been completed, but with five to go, there are still plenty of points up for grabs, leaving all of them in the fight for longer.
Madrid offers a golden opportunity, especially for the rookies, as it is a new track for everyone. Here, Mini will not have the advantage of being more familiar with the track, leaving a window of opportunity for Camara to close the two-point gap and leap into second.
While Tsolov might be on top with the strongest momentum, the return from summer break could knock him from the spot. Once the rest and recharge are over, it leaves his rivals an opportunity to steal the lead in the next few rounds.
Narrow margins, fortitude and resilience, and, importantly, consistency help shape the championship fight. With all three drivers proving they have what it takes to run away with the title, the intense battle continues.
