Robin Frijns set the fastest time in the opening practice session of Season 6 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

The Envision Virgin Racing driver improved at the close of the 45-minute session, with the Dutchman setting a best lap time of a 1:16.137.

In what was a dusty opening session in Diriyah, track evolution was consistent while stoppages were ever-present, with NIO 333's Ma Qing Hua crashing early on while GEOX Dragon's Brendon Hartley also clattered the wall with 12-minutes remaining.

Hartley's team-mate, Nico Muller, emerged as the second-fastest driver, 1.264s off the pace while Sam Bird was third-fastest, a further 0.160s down on the Swiss rookie.

Mercedes EQ's Stoffel Vandoorne delivered the German marque fourth in its opening competitive session in Formula E. Sebastien Buemi completed the top five for Nissan e.dams.

2018 Ad Diriyah E-Prix race winner Antonio Felix da Costa ended FP1 in sixth as the lead DS Techeetah driver while reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne was only 17th.

2.210s adrift of Frijns, Jaguar Racing's Mitch Evans followed da Costa in seventh while Daniel Abt was the lead Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver in eighth.

In the second Mercedes Silver Arrow 01, 2019 Formula 2 champion Nyck de Vries was ninth while Lucas di Grassi completed the top 10.

Outside of the top 10, it was a difficult session for Mahindra Racing, with Pascal Wehrlein facing a total of three on-track stoppages in the Indian marque's ZF-powered M6Electro, failing to set a lap time while Jerome d'Ambrosio was 11th.
