Marc Marquez: ‘2019 Jorge Lorenzo not the reality’

Marc Marquez refuses to remember out-going team-mate Jorge Lorenzo for his tough MotoGP swansong campaign this year, in which he scored just 28 points compared to Marquez’s 420.

Lorenzo struggled to mould his smooth riding style to the buckaroo-style aggressive nature of the ’19 spec RC213-V, culminating in a best result of 11th at Le Mans and a near-career ending injury when he fractured his T6 and T8 vertebrae in a violent Assen crash.

Marquez meanwhile went on to notch up 12 victories and a record for all-time points scored across a premier class motorcycle racing season on his way to his sixth MotoGP title in seven years.

The Spaniard declared he would not remember Lorenzo-who remains the only man to take a title away from Marquez in his MotoGP tenure so far with his success with Yamaha in ‘15-for his troubles across ’19, commenting that the Lorenzo on display this year “is not the reality”.

“Of course what we’ve seen from Jorge this year is not the reality, of course I’m disappointed in the way he’s finished his career because I don’t think of him like this,” said Marquez.

“The one I remember is the one that’s always winning, the one that has his own strong character and riding style.

“To me he is one of the best references in MotoGP and will be one of the references for the young kids coming through.”

Marquez meanwhile admitted that while he is yet to believe his ’19 campaign is “the best of his career”, he concedes that it will be difficult to “replicate this level of consistency” in future title tilts.

“It’s amazing. 2019 will be, I’m not sure the best year of my career but one of the best for sure,” began Marquez.

“It will be really difficult to replicate this level of consistency with 12 victories and 18 podiums, and only one crash when I was leading the race.

It’s been an amazing season, to finish in a good way is good the victory is important but it’s great the team can celebrate winning the teams title.”
