Chevrolet teams in the NASCAR Cup Series will switch from the Camaro ZL1 to the Camaro ZL1 1LE in 2020, Chevrolet announced Thursday. According to a press release from the manufacturer, the new ZL1 1LE is the “fastest, most track-capable production Camaro, ever.”

The new Camaro comes just a season ahead of NASCAR's planned introduction of its next generation of Cup Series car. and just two seasons after Chevrolet introduced the Camaro ZL1 to the series. The ZL1 replaced the SS at the start of the 2018 season.

“The ZL1 1LE is the highest performer within the Camaro production-car lineup,” Chevrolet US Vice President of Performance Motorsports Jim Campbell said. “We took lessons from the production car and applied them to the new 2020 Cup car.”

The Camaro ZL1 struggled in its first season in the series. After an Austin Dillon win in the 2018 Daytona 500 season-opener, Chevrolet won only three additional races the remainder of the season, all by Chase Elliott. Chevrolet has seven wins, so far, in 2019, after 33 of the 36 points-playing races — three more by Elliott and one each from Alex Bowman, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson and NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Justin Haley.
