James Hinchcliffe admits he is shocked at the events which saw him leave the Arrow McLaren Racing SP team but is working 'flat-out' to find a deal for the 2020 NTT IndyCar season.
The Canadian driver was pulled out of the driver line-up in favour of Patricio O'Ward and 2019 Indy Lights champion Oliver Askew.
While remaining under contract for the team, he has been given permission to seek opportunities for a full-time seat with other teams.
In light of his personal contract with Japanese engine manufacturer Honda, Hinchcliffe is left with limited options to pursue a full-time ride.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing had been looking to add a third car, but remained coy on the idea late into the twilight of the 2019 campaign, but has yet to be ruled out.
Chip Ganassi Racing is an unlikely destination as former team-mate Marcus Ericsson recently joined the team, increasing them to a three-car outfit.
Other destinations could lie in Dale Coyne Racing alongside Sebastien Bourdais or Meyer Shank Racing who are partners with Honda in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship and have been using their engines in IndyCar.
In a statement released on social media, Hinchcliffe said: "It goes without saying the happenings of the past 48 hours have been difficult."We were shocked to learn we would not be in the #5 car for the 2020 season.
"Obviously it's very late in the game, but my team is working flat-out to try and salvage a full 2020 IndyCar campaign.
"The support from the motorsport community has been overwhelming and is endlessly appreciated. We only get to do what we do because of the fans and your passion is amazing.
"Disappointment aside, I still have my health incredible family, friends and fans supporting me, and at the end of the day, there's not much maple syrup and a Leafs game can't fix.
"We've been kicked down before and came back stronger. This is simply our next fight.
"Challenge accepted."
