Miguel Oliveira will not take part in the remainder of the Australian grand prix weekend after being declared unfit with severe hand swelling following his FP4 crash.
The Tech 3 KTM man was blown off course at Turn 1 by the extreme winds that hit the Phillip Island circuit in FP4, going down heavily at around 180mph.
Despite not suffering any bone breakages in the impact, Oliveira suffered severe swelling and pain with his hands and has therefore been ruled out for the remainder of the weekend, and will look to return for next week’s Malaysian event.
The Portuguese riders crash triggered a red flag that would ultimately bring the session to an early end, with a subsequent riders meeting leading to the cancellation of qualifying due to the adverse weather conditions.
Several riders also elected to not take part in the preceding FP3 session due to the heavy gusts of wind, Cal Crutchlow and Fabio Quartararo at one point gesticulating heavily for the session to be stopped after they were also blown off course.
Qualifying will now take place ahead of the Moto3 race, with Q1 set to get underway at 10:20am local time ahead of Q2 at 10:45am and the lightweight contest at 12:00pm.
