Despite Joan Mir recording his best performance by far with fifth in Brno, he believes such consistent MotoGP results are not possible.
The Spaniard had one of the best getaways after qualifying as the top Honda rider in 10th place, before a duel with KTM’s Pedro Acosta and Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer.
Mir’s battle with Acosta came to an end on the last lap due to a technical problem, which promoted the 2020 champion to fifth.
Honda technical director Romano Albesiano expressed in a previous interview that he believes the Japanese marque’s package should be delivering top-five results, though Mir dismissed the notion.
“No. I don’t agree because we depend on other people’s mistakes,” said Mir to media including Motorsport Week at Brno.
“[For] consistent [results], I will say no, because I don’t like to depend from the Aprilia and Ducati making mistakes.
“I’m happy that Romano is optimistic because it means that he wants to make good results, but I’m there riding the bike, and I know the capabilities of this bike.
“We close a bit. I know that if everything is on point, I can do it. But not every weekend. So this is something that we have to work more for it.”
The 28-year-old was the only rider on the grid to opt for the soft rear tyre, a gamble that ultimately paid off as he managed its wear in the hot track conditions.
On the thought process behind choosing the soft, he stated: “Compared to the style of the rider, that matches the rider.
“I know that my riding is in the entry and mid corner, and with the medium tyres, you travel more but have more stability out of the corner.
“My style is a bit more approaching the [corner] entry with more speed and with the soft, I could do it but I had to manage the tyre drop.
“In the past, I was very good at always controlling that. For me, it was the right choice for my style.”
