Philipp Eng: ‘Extremely proud’ to drive in first DTM/Super GT crossover races

Philipp Eng says he is proud to be able to take part in the first crossover races between DTM and SUPER GT, which take place at Hockenheim this weekend.

During the DTM's season finale, SUPER GT entries from Honda, Lexus and Nissan will join the DTM regular in the first ever competitive meeting between the two series. The Austrian, who took his maiden DTM victory at Zolder this season, will be amongst those taking on their new Japanese rivals in his BMW M4 DTM.

“I take my hat off to DTM and SUPER GT for making these joint races happen," Eng commented. "I’m extremely proud of being allowed to participate in such an event as a driver. All of the guest drivers are top guys: not only Jenson Button, but also the other drivers. Moreover, I am also looking forward very much to racing against other brands."

Despite his shock victory at Zolder in the early stages of the season, the BMW Team RBM driver has not had the greatest of seasons. Eng scored two more podiums after his win in Zolder and Misano, but has since spent most of the campaign on the back foot against the dominant Audis.

After Misano, his best finish was fourth in Assen. Eng now sits fifth in the championship and more than 130 points behind champion Rast.

Despite BMW's struggles, Eng is still looking forward to the 2019 curtain call.

"In any case, the weekend will be super exciting, and hopefully the start of something big. At the start of the season, we had a good weekend at Hockenheim, so I’m confident that we can be strong again.

It’s our goal that a BMW driver ends up in the top three of the championship standings, either Marco [Wittmann] or myself.”
