Jamie Green has taken pole position from Audi Team Rosberg stablemate Rene Rast by the narrowest of margins. The British veteran set a time of 01:20:032 at the Nürburgring to beat championship leader Rast to the top spot by one-thousandth of a second.
Rast, who saw title rival Müller qualify outside of the top three, further extends his championship lead and now just needs seven points over Müller to claim his second DTM championship.
Further back, the Sunday session proved to be extremely competitive, with the top four separated by less than a tenth, while the top ten was covered by some three-tenths.
Mike Rockenfeller, who retired yesterday, claimed the final available point in qualifying by taking third place, just 0.075s behind Green. He will be lining up alongside Robin Frijns. The two were separated by 0.015s.
South African rookie Jonathan Aberdein put in yet another impressive qualifying performance to take fifth ahead of Loic Duval and Timo Glock. Marco Wittmann, who is celebrating his 100th DTM race with BMW, came eight ahead of fellow BMW drivers Bruno Spengler, Sheldon van der Linde and Philipp Eng.
After his disastrous race yesterday, Nico Müller suffered another blow to his fading title hopes as he only managed to qualify in fourteenth place, nearly half a second behind the man he is chasing for the title.
The Swiss driver only outqualified the Aston Martins of Ferdinand von Habsburg, Daniel Juncadella and Jake Dennis. Paul di Resta was the only driver not complete any laps, as he was sidelined with mechanical issues.
