Maximilian Gunther has been named as one half of BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s driver lineup for Formula E’s sixth season of competition.

The 22-year-old German made his debut in the all-electric single-seater series last year, making 10 appearances for GEOX Dragon over the course of the 13-race campaign.

Over the course of his debut season, Gunther performed admirably and maturely, piloting his Penske EV-3 car to Super Pole on two occasions while also securing a pair of fifth-place finishes in Paris and Bern.

“It is fantastic to be part of BMW i Motorsport now,” said Günther. “BMW i Andretti Motorsport had a strong maiden season in Formula E, won the very first race and was involved in the fight for the title down to the wire.

“That is why this switch is definitely a fantastic step for me. It is great to compete for BMW again. That’s where everything started for me in single-seater racing in 2011.”

Joining BMW, Gunther replaces Antonio Felix da Costa who is set to join DS Techeetah to partner reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne, taking the former seat of Andre Lotterer who joins Porsche for its first season in the championship.

The identity of Gunther’s team-mate for Season 6 will be announced in the coming weeks, with Season 5 driver Alexander Sims set to remain with the team for a second year following impressive performances in New York.

Pre-season testing for Formula E’s 2019/20 campaign will take place from October 15-18 at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia ahead of the second running of the Ad Diriyah E-Prix from November 22-23.
