Campos Racing's Jack Aitken took victory from pole position in a hard fought FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race in Monza.

Aitken led the field away from the start and led an all British top three until the final lap where Callum Ilott out-braked himself trying to pass Aitken into Turn 1.

The British-Korean was also shown the black and white flag for unsportsmanlike behaviour towards the end of the race for consistently weaving down the straights to try and break the tow.

MP Motorsport's Jordan King took his second podium of the season with second place, he hounded Aitken for the early part of the race.

King did take the lead on Lap 7 into Turn 1 from a long way back. However it was short-lived after the Virtual Safety Car came out for the stricken Sergio Sette Camara at the Della Roggia chicane.

As the VSC ended on Lap 9, Aitken got a better run out of the Parabolica to re-pass King down the main straight. Two laps later King tried to pass into the Della Roggia chicane but they touched, both missing the chicane as a result which allowed Ilott to jump into second.

Championship leader Nyck De Vries would claim the final spot to further extend his vast points lead in the standings after Nobuharu Matsushita was penalised five seconds for speeding under the VSC.

On the podium, the three drivers decided champagne would not be sprayed, instead, they held up the French Tricolour in memory of their fallen friend, Anthoine Hubert.

UNI-Virtuosi's Guanyu Zhou would also move up a place to take fourth with Matsushita falling to fifth.

Mick Schumacher finished in sixth for Prema after showing good pace early on, but lost speed after out-braking himself into T1 and causing a small flat spot on his left front tyre. The German driver did take the fastest lap of the race for two extra points.

Giuliano Alesi finished seventh ahead of Carlin's Louis Deletraz who finished eighth after coming from the back of the field, claiming the final point on offer.

Nikita Mazepin and Nicholas Latifi round out the top 10.

Ilott had looked to be on course to make it an all British podium had he not made the final lap mistake into Turn 1, The Sauber Junior Team by Charouz driver eventually finished 12th with a delaminated front left tyre.

Luca Ghiotto also suffered damage early on after hitting Camara in the rear on the opening lap.

On Lap 7, the Italian then out-braked himself into Turn 1 and hit De Vries into the side of Camara which led to a broken front wing for Ghiotto and a puncture for Camara which led to the VSC after he spun at the Della Roggia chicane.

The FIA Formula 2 championship returns to action in Sochi, Russia on September 27-29.
