Jenzer Motorsport's Yuki Tsunoda battled his way to his first ever FIA Formula 3 victory in a damp Sprint Race at Monza

A night of heavy rain had left the circuit soaked and the field completed a standing start in the sodden conditions.

The Honda-backed driver fought hard as he came through the field, he ran behind Jake Hughes for the majority of the race before coming back at the British driver late on to score his maiden F3 win.

Fellow Red Bull-backed driver Liam Lawson secured his best-ever finish in Formula 3 with second place as Hughes struggled with the tyres late on. The Australian was often seen drifting beautifully out of the second Lesmo which seemed to help him keep up with his rivals.

Hughes got a storming start from third on the grid and took the lead into Turn 1, however as the track began to dry he lost ground but managed to hold onto third place for HWA Racelab after his wet tyres appeared to have overheated in the final laps.

Richard Verschoor would finish a strong fourth place for MP Motorsport just behind Hughes, the Dutchman also taking the two points on offer for the fastest lap in the process.

Trident's Pedro Piquet passed Leonardo Pulcini for fifth place on the penultimate lap, the Italian driver could not hold off the Brazilian any longer and would finish sixth.

Fabio Scherer finished a long way off the leading pack in seventh as he tried to fend off championship leader Robert Shwartzman.

On the final lap, Shwartzman looked to pass Scherer for seventh but a mistake at the Ascari chicane left the Russian vulnerable from ART's Christian Lundgaard behind going down to the Parabolica.

Shwartzman narrowly held onto the final point from the Danish driver as the pair drag raced out of the final corner to the line.

Logan Sargeant rounded out the top 10 for Carlin Buzz Racing.

FIA Formula 3 returns for the final round of the championship in Sochi, Russia on September 27-29.
