Nicolo Bulega smashes Portimao lap record to claim WorldSBK Superpole

WorldSBK championship leader Nicolo Bulega saved his best run till last to secure pole position in Portimao.

The Italian smashed Toprak Razgatlioglu’s lap record with a strong lap time of 1:38.495s, pipping his team-mate Iker Lecuona, who secured second place as the factory Ducati duo dominated the 15-minute Superpole session.

Yari Montella secured third place for Barni Spark Racing, ensuring a front row lockout for the Bologna manufacturer.

BMW’s Miguel Oliveira qualified in fourth place in front of his home crowd, followed by Marc VDS rider Sam Lowes and Pata Maxus Yamaha rider Xavi Vierge.

Bimota’s Alex Lowes secured seventh for the Rimini-based outfit, with Lorenzo Baldassarri and Danilo Petrucci accompanying him on the third row.

Axel Bassani rounded off the top 10 aboard the Bimota, followed by two-time WorldSBK champion Alvaro Bautista and GRT Yamaha rider Remy Gardner.

Garrett Gerloff secured 13th for Kawasaki, closely followed by Yamaha’s Andrea Locatelli, MGM Racing’s Tarran Mackenzie and Alberto Surra.

Stefano Manzi secured 17th ahead of the Honda duo of Jonathan Rea and Somkiat Chantra, before Tommy Bridewell and the two Yamaha riders, Bahttin Sofuoglu and Mattia Rato.
