Haas to run identical cars in Belgium after split-spec experiment

Haas has confirmed it will use the same spec cars this weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix for both Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen following several races of experimentation.

The team switched Grosjean to their season-opening Australian spec car at the British GP, whereas Magnussen ran with the then latest spec introduced in Spain in order to try and understand their struggles.

That experiment continued in Germany – where Magnussen took several upgrades – and again in Hungary, but team boss Guenther Steiner has now confirmed they will both run the latest upgrades this weekend at Spa.

"For Spa we will go with the upgraded car, which we ran at Hockenheim," he explained. "We’ve learned quite a bit out of it and tried to improve the car by changing some of the components. Both cars will be the same spec, and hopefully we can still learn more about it."

The team has struggled with its tyres specifically and sits ninth in the standings, five points adrift of Racing Point in eighth.

Steiner says he's unsure as to whether they will deliver any further upgrades for the season, despite the midfield being so close, admitting they've already switched part of their focus to 2020.

"The focus has already switched, partly, to the 2020 car," he added. "We need to see what we can come up with in the wind tunnel, with the small developments we do there for the 2019 car, and if we bring any upgrade kits. We don’t know yet.

"The midfield is still tight, as evidenced by fifth-place Toro Rosso being 17 points away. Can a run up the constructors’ ranks still happen in these last nine races? Everything is possible, but it is difficult as our car doesn’t perform well in races, and that’s where you score the points.

"Nevertheless, we will be trying hard to pick up whatever we can. Hopefully, we can get a few more results, and then we’ll see how we end up in the standings."
