Mercedes conservative with Belgian GP tyre choice

Pirelli has revealed teams’ compound selections for the post-summer Formula 1 grand prix in Belgium, with reigning champions Mercedes adopting a relatively conservative approach.

Pirelli has nominated the C1, C2 and C3 compounds in order to deal with the high-energy Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Each driver has 13 sets of tyres available for the weekend, from which they are permitted free choice of nominated compound for 10 of those sets.

Mercedes has opted for eight sets of Soft tyres compared to the 10 sets of Softs chosen by primary rivals Ferrari and Red Bull.

The white-banded Hard tyre has been all but rejected.

19 of the 20 drivers will have just the one set mandated by Pirelli, with Williams’ George Russell the outlier, opting for an additional batch of the compound.
