ART's Christian Lundgaard claimed his maiden FIA Formula 3 championship victory after leading with a superb lights-to-flag performance at the Hungaroring.

The Danish driver got a superb start and soon pulled a gap to team-mate Max Fewtrell and didn't look back, ensuring he snatched his first win after getting penalised in the opening race of the season.

Lundgaard even pushed on the final lap of the race to claim the fastest lap to add an extra two points to his tally for the afternoon, adding to the four he already had for taking pole position.

Fewtrell was unable to make an impression on Lundgaard's pace and continued to fall behind, however, the British driver did equal his best result of the campaign with another second-place finish after the second place in the Austrian Feature Race.

HWA Racelab's Jake Hughes put in a stunning performance to claim the final spot on the podium, he was stuck behind Hitech Grand Prix's Juri Vips for the majority of the race.

Vips had got stuck behind the Trident of Niko Kari for the majority of the race, but the Finn's tyres continued to degrade, Vips seized his chance on lap 18 and Hughes followed two corners later.

Hughes then passed Vips with on the penultimate lap to take the third place away from the Estonian with a bold move around the outside of Turn 3.

Vips with his fourth-place finish closed in on his title rivals from Prema in the form of Robert Shwartzman and Jehan Daruvala as both finished further down the order.

In the final few laps, a train of cars battled to get by the struggling Kari and there were countless passes with drivers locking up at almost every corner as they chased their rivals.

Shwartzman held onto to fifth place at the finish line ahead Carlin's Felipe Drugovich who scored his best finish of the season in sixth and duly claimed his first points too.

Leonardo Pulcini claimed third place for Hitech Grand Prix ahead of Marcus Armstrong in eighth, the New Zealander will be on reverse grid pole position for Sunday's sprint race.

Jenzer Motorsport's Yuki Tsunoda and Carlin's Logan Sargeant rounded out the top 10.

Daruvala lost his second place to Vips in the championship standings after not scoring any points in 11th place, losing further ground to Shwartzman who remains the championship leader by 20 points.

Kari fell down 12 positions in the final 5 laps, showing how much his Pirelli tyres fell off the cliff at the end, eventually finishing in 15th place.

Sauber Junior Team By Charouz's Lirim Zendeli had car troubles in the early stages of the races, but was able to rejoin the race 5 laps later after the team fixed the issues in the pitlane.

Pedro Piquet was the first retirement after complaining of brake issues and duly boxed his Trident.

Sunday's sprint race is scheduled to get underway at 10:00am local time.
