Lewis Hamilton has said he's feeling "much better" following an illness which almost ruled him out of the German Grand Prix.

Hamilton arrived at Hockenheim unsure as to whether he would compete, with Mercedes preparing to replace him with reserve driver Esteban Ocon.

It's believed the five-time champion was suffering from the flu and admitted the illness had impacted his performance over the weekend, which saw him finish outside the top five for the first time this season.

In order to recover ahead of the Hungarian GP this weekend, which is a back-to-back event with Germany, the Briton cleared his schedule.

"I’ve cancelled everything I have for the next few days so I’m going home probably just to sleep the next few days and try and get over this bug,” he said.

“It’s not really improving massively but hopefully over the next couple of days it will."

But writing on social media on Thursday, Hamilton provided an update on his condition: "Good morning! Sorry I've been missing in action. I'm in much better shape coming into the weekend, hoping to be 100% by the weekened.

"I hope you are having a great week, Budapest is beautiful and the weather is great. Crunch time, let's go!"

Despite finishing 9th in Germany, Hamilton was still able to extend his points lead over team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who crashed out of the race.
