Robert Kubica says Williams’ programme with its new update package was compromised as soon as he left the garage during German Grand Prix practice, having lost a piece of bodywork.
Williams has spent 2019 rooted to the back of the grid and is the only team yet to escape from Q1 or score a championship point.
It introduced new aerodynamic parts at Hockenheim, with Kubica running them on Friday, ahead of George Russell also taking the new components on Saturday.
Kubica finished ahead of Russell in FP1 but in FP2 the Briton set a quicker overall time, edging Kubica by a tenth, albeit with the pair over a second adrift of the back of the midfield.
“We didn’t have an easy day today, compromised already on the installation lap,” said Kubica.
“We will have to revise everything and fix some parts in order [that] they stay attached to the car.
“It’s the second weekend in a row that something is breaking down.
“When you leave the garage and already on installation lap you are compromised, and it was very important for us to do our programme, which we set up, unfortunately we were influenced by this straight away, so it was not an easy day today.”
When asked whether the compromise – which Kubica did not elaborate on – could be fixed, he replied: “We hope we can fix it… we were a bit too fragile… that’s how it is.
“We have to make sure everything will stay attached to the car and hopefully tomorrow will be better.”
Kubica added that the different conditions at Hockenheim compared to Silverstone made an assessment from a driving perspective "impossible to judge."
"The conditions are completely different, the track is different, the tyres are operating in different windows so it’s impossible to judge.
"If you ask me to compare Silverstone where it was 18c with 38c [on Friday at Hockenheim] and at a completely different track it’s impossible to compare unless you have a magic ball."
