FIA President Jean Todt has come out with some favourable comments which will surely go down well with F1 fans.
The Frenchman told La Stampa that any new tracks would now be assessed for a race license on safety and entertainment value, instead of just the former, as is present.
The comments were made after fans criticised the season finale in Abu Dhabi which provided little overtaking.
“We need to encourage more overtaking, it was impossible [in Abu Dhabi], said Todt.
“I’m speaking as the President of the FIA. Hamilton had fresh tyres and was two seconds [a lap] faster than Kubica and yet he failed to pass.”
It was a similar situation for Fernando Alonso who lost out on a third championship as he got stuck behind a defensive Vitaly Petrov.
“From now on, before a new circuit is approved, we will evaluate the potential for the spectacle as well as the safety,” added the 64-year-old.
Todt also mentioned the possibility of introducing a 1-10 ranking system which would rate tracks on entertainment and spectacle. If tracks scored lowly, they would have to make improvements to gain an extended race license or face the chop.
