The Grand Prix of St.Petersburg is poised to keep its place on the NTT IndyCar Series schedule through to 2024 after unanimous approval from the St.Petersburg City Council.

Set partially on the Albert Whitted airfield on the Florida coast whilst racing into downtown St.Petersburg, the event has been the traditional season opener for the IndyCar championship for the past nine years [Except for 2010] whilst being on the schedule since 2003; albeit missing 2004.

Team Penske's Josef Newgarden won this season's event and is currently the championship leader, 29 points clear of Andretti Autosport's Alexander Rossi.

The event will continue to be the curtain-raiser for the IndyCar Series for the next five years on the second week of March with the following approved dates.

“The Firestone Grand Prix has a home in the Sunshine City. I am so pleased to have this cornerstone event of the NTT IndyCar Series dedicated to St. Petersburg for the next five years,” said City of St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.

“I want to thank Kim Green and Kevin Savoree for their partnership, and for their dedication to St. Pete.”

“We are thrilled that the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will continue on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront and Albert Whitted Airport,” added Kim Green, chairman and CEO of Green Savoree St. Petersburg.

“The success and continued growth of the event is only possible with the great partnership we’ve enjoyed with the City of St. Petersburg, Mayor Kriseman and his tremendous team, and this overwhelming support from City Council.

“Personally, I’m proud to call St. Petersburg home and raise my family in this city.”
