Jorge Lorenzo will miss the next two MotoGP races in the Czech Repulic and Austria and will return for the British round at Silverstone, Honda has announced.

The Mallorcan fractured vertebrae in his back in a high-speed crash during FP1 for the Dutch TT last month and was forced to miss both that race as well as the previous round, the German GP at the Sachsenring as he took time out to recover.

Honda has confirmed in a statement though that Lorenzo has not sufficiently recovered to compete in the next two races, and will therefore return for the British GP at the end of August as well as confirming test rider Stefan Bradl- who was due to wildcard at the Czech round anyway- will replace him for both races.

“Jorge Lorenzo and the Repsol Honda Team have agreed it is best for Lorenzo to miss both the Czech and Austrian rounds to continue his recovery and avoid any further risk of injury,” read the statement.

“Having spent the summer break working on his recovery, Lorenzo’s condition has improved but he is still in some pain and his movement on a bike remains restricted. Silverstone has been set as his new objective for returning to riding for the Repsol Honda Team.”

Lorenzo has suffered a tough start to his tenure with the factory Honda squad, having failed to break the top ten so far with a best finish of just 11th, achieved in the French GP at the Le Mans circuit.

He joined the team following two years at Ducati, in which he scored three victories and a best championship result of 7th in 2017, his first campaign with the Italian marque.
