Only a top Formula 1 team could lure me away from Formula E – Jean-Eric Vergne

Two-time Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne says it would take an offer from one of the top three Formula 1 teams to lure him away from Formula E and back to the series he last competed in back in 2014 with Toro Rosso.

Vergne made his F1 debut in 2012 as a member of Red Bull's junior programme and faired well against his team-mates. In his debut season at Toro Rosso he beat Daniel Ricciardo by six points, but the following season fell behind the Australian who now drives for Renault, and then thrashed then-rookie Daniil Kvyat by 22 points to eight.

However Vergne was ousted from the sport as Toro Rosso refreshed its line-up with Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr in 2015, forcing Vergne to switch to Formula E, which had just started as a new series.

The Frenchman has gone on to enjoy great success in the all-electric series, becoming the first two-time champion with back-to-back titles this and last season with the Techeetah outfit.

Therefore, although the lure of F1 remains, Vergne insists he would only consider it if a top offer were to come his way, as he has no interest in fighting only for points finishes.

"Probably yes," he told Crash.net when asked if an offer from the top three would persuade him to leave Formula E.

"I have been in a midfield team when I was a young driver and I understand this is where you have to go and prove yourself, but when you are at my age, we don’t have time anymore to prove yourself in a midfield F1 team.

"It doesn’t really interest me in fighting for eighth or ninth, or sometimes the points, sometimes not the points. I wouldn’t like to go back and join the situation I was in F1.

"I’m a lot happier in Formula E fighting for the titles, for wins, being in a top team in a championship that is growing massively.

"If I had – and it’s a massive if – an offer from one of the top F1 teams then I would definitely consider it."
