BMW ‘working hard’ to maximise Season 5 package for New York City E-Prix

BMW i Andretti Motorsport team boss Roger Griffiths has said that the German marque has been working hard to maximise the potential of its iFE.18 car ahead of this weekend's New York City E-Prix.

BMW joined Formula E at the start of Season 5 and enjoyed success from the outset, with Antonio Felix da Costa taking pole position and victory at the season-opening Ad Diriyah E-Prix while the team also showed competitive pace in Marrakesh.

Since then, however, the team has failed to replicate its early-season form, standing on the podium on only two occasions since the opening race of the season in Saudi Arabia.

At last month's Swiss E-Prix in Bern, BMW arguably experienced its worst race of the season, with both da Costa and team-mate Alexander Sims finishing outside of the top 10, failing to register any points.

With da Costa still standing a mathematical chance of taking the Drivers' Championship despite trailing present leader Jean-Eric Vergne by 48 points, BMW is working hard to maximise the potential of its 2018/19 car ahead of the New York finale which also marks the team's second home race of the season:

“The final rounds of the Season 5 championship, hosted in New York mean effectively two more home races for the BMW i Andretti Motorsport team after the BMW i Berlin E-Prix," said Griffiths.

"Set against the backdrop of Manhattan Island, the Brooklyn track has an exciting combination of technical sections, surface changes and passing opportunities.

"The challenge of a double-header means differing schedules on each race day, along with the challenge of preparing the cars for the following day’s race all putting additional demands on mechanics and engineers alike.

"Despite the disappointment of the last race, the team remains fully focused on achieving the best results possible for both Team and Drivers’ Championships and has been working hard since Bern to maximise the potential from the BMW iFE.18 package.”

The double-header New York City E-Prix will take place on July 13 and 14 and marks the final race weekend of Formula E's fifth season of competition.
