Pirelli outlines strategy options for Austrian GP

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli has outlined the most favourable strategy options for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Pirelli has taken the C3, C4 and C5 compounds in order to deal with the 71-lap race at the Red Bull Ring, which is likely to take place in hot weather.

Pirelli reckons a Medium/Hard strategy, making a pit stop between laps 14 and 20, is optimal.

Its second-quickest strategy is likely to be a Soft/Hard approach, with the pit stop coming between laps 12 and 16.

It says a two-stop approach is “definitely slower, but several permutations are possible using all the compounds, with a similar combined race time.”

Pole sitter Charles Leclerc will start on Soft tyres but his three nearest rivals – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and both Mercedes drivers – will use Mediums for the first stint of the grand prix.

The remainder of the top 10 on the grid will use Softs for the first stint, with the other drivers having free choice of starting compound.
