Juri Vips wins in Austria to end Prema dominance

Juri Vips stormed to a dominant first victory of 2019 in Austria, putting an end to Prema Racing's dominance in Formula 3 so far this season.

While it was Marcus Armstrong who started from pole position, Vips lined up in third place, the pair split by ART Grand Prix's Max Fewtrell who lined up on the front row of the grid alongside.

When the five red lights out, it was Fewtrell who got the jump on Armstrong, quickly clearing the Ferrari-backed driver into Turn 1 before falling to second when the polesitter closed the gap once more to pass into Turn 3 only moments later.

With Armstrong out in front, the Kiwi set the fastest lap of the race at the end of his second tour of the circuit to extend his lead while Vips overtook Fewtrell, moving ever closer to Armstrong.

Closing in, Vips cleared Armstrong on lap 5 when using DRS on the run to Turn 4 with Fewtrell also following through to remain in contention for victory.

DRS played a large role in the first Formula 3 race of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring, however, despite remaining in-touch with Vips, the 19-year-old Birmingham-born Brit was unable to overtake, leaving Vips to take the chequered flag and the fastest lap of the race, securing 27 points.

Taking second, Fewtrell secured his first podium of the season while Armstrong stood on the final step, holding off a late attack from team-mate Jehan Daruvala who was fourth.

Robert Schwartzman completed the top five after starting in 10th place, the Russian racer engaging in and coming out on top a late-race scrap with Pedro Piquet and Jake Hughes to secure 10 points.

Piquet cleared Hughes on the final lap to take sixth while the HWA Racelab driver was seventh.

Lirim Zendeli took eighth to secure reverse grid pole for Race 2 while Leonardo Pulcini was ninth in the second Hitech GP car. Richard Verschoor completed the top 10.
