WEC title fights at Le Mans: who’s in contention?

In an hour's time, the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans will start and with it the the final round of the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship.

Once the flag is waved by Princess Charlene of Monaco, the next 24 hours will be deciding in all four classes. So with that in mind: who's in with a championship shot in each class?

LMP1

In LMP1, it's a straight fight between the pair of Toyota TS050 Hybrids. The #8 of Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso hold a 31-point lead over stablemates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose-Maria Lopez. With 39 points up for grabs for the winner, the fight for the LMP Driver's Championship is not quite decided yet, even though Alonso and company only need a seventh place finish to seal the title.

LMP2

Realistically, the LMP2 championship battle is a two-car fight. The #36 Signatech Alpine of Nicolas Lapierre, Andre Negrao and Pierre Thiriet hold a narrow lead of four points to the #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing entry of Ho-Pin Tung, Stephane Richelmi and Gabriel Aubry. The #37 car of David Heinemeier Hansson, Jordan King and Ricky Taylor is one point further back, but that driver lineup can not win the title as it was brought in before Sebring when the original Malaysian crew was replaced.

Dragonspeed is an outside contender for the title with 26 points less than the leader. For both Signatech Alpine and Jackie Chan DC Racing, a win would be enough for the title, while Dragonspeed needs to win and see the other teams run into trouble. If the #36 and #38 were to somehow end up with equal points on Sunday, Jackie Chan DC Racing would win the title as it holds more wins: three versus Signatech Alpine's one.

GTE Pro

In GTE Pro, it's a straight fight between Porsche's two WEC cars. The #92 of Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen have one hand on the title with a 36-point lead over the #91 of Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz. With 39 points still available, the #92 needs a finish of eighth or better, while Bruni and Lietz would need a class win in order to become champions.

GTE Am

In GTE Am, five squads still hold a potential shot at the title. The #56 Project 1 Porsche of Jörg Bergmeister, Patrick Lindsey and Egidio Perfetti holds a 23-point lead over the #54 Spirit of Race Ferrari. TF Sport is a further 26 points down, with the #77 Dempsey-Proton Porsche trailing by 30 points. The #98 Aston Martin Racing crew also still has an outside shot with 77 points.

Bergmeister, Lindsey and Perfetti needs a fourth to capture the championship. Spirit of Race and TF Sport will both need a win or second place finish. The #77 and #98 are both outsiders and both need a victory to even have a chance of the championship. And even if they win, they'll need a considerable amount of bad luck for their rivals.
