Kevin Magnussen set for pit lane start after Q2 crash

Kevin Magnussen is poised to start Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix from the pit lane after his heavy crash in Q2.

Magnussen hit the wall as he exited the chicane and sustained a broken wheel rim, with the damage sustained pitching the Dane into a secondary, and heavier, impact with the pit wall.

Magnussen was uninjured in the accident and the red-flagged session meant that he made it through to Q3, in which he did not participate.

But the Dane will relinquish his 10th place grid spot on account of the changes that need to take place.

“We need to change the chassis – we will start from the pit lane, obviously – we need to change the gearbox, there’s no point trying to start somewhere at the back with the C5 tyre,” said Haas boss Guenther Steiner.

“So we start from the pit lane. The best way is to change the chassis, the quickest and safest way is to do that and then go back and start from the pit lane for once.”

On the accident itself, Magnussen said: “I just had a snap, and brushed the wall.

“It wasn't even that hard, but I caught the wall on the rim so it just blew the rim and took the tyre off the rim, and sent me over to the other side.”

Magnussen dropping to the pit lane means Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will start from ninth, with Daniil Kvyat promoted to row five, aided by Carlos Sainz Jr.’s grid penalty.
