MotoGP podium finisher Jonas Folger will return to the MotoGP paddock for the first time since mid-2017, as a replacement for Khairul Idham Pawi.

The German will take over from the Sepang International teams original replacement rider Mattia Pasini, who has recently broken his collarbone in a motocross incident.

Pasini originally replaced Pawi following Jerez, where the Malaysian had suffered a nasty finger injury.

The Italian's injury however means he is unfit to take part at Barcelona, paving the way for a racing return for Folger.

In addition to the Catalan GP, he will compete in the Dutch TT at Assen as well as at the German grand prix, held at the Sachsenring.

The German scored three victories in three seasons during a three year stint in the intermediate class, then scored a home podium at the Sachsenring in his rookie year for the then Satillite Yamaha Tech 3 squad.

He was then forced to sit the rest of the '17 season following Aragon out due to illness, later announcing his retirement from racing all-together shortly prior to' 18 pre-season testing.

Folger also has extensive previous experience with the new-for-2019 Triumph powered Moto2 machine, having been one of the main development riders for the new programme.

"I’m really excited to get the chance to be competing again. I can’t wait to get back on a bike and get that racing feeling," said Folger.

"PETRONAS Sprinta Racing are an exceptionally professional team in all three categories and I know some of the crew in the Moto2 squad from the past.

"I have positive memories of Barcelona as I’ve been on the podium and put in some fast laps there in the past.

"It’s actually one of my favourite tracks and it suits my riding style well.

"The Kalex is a really fun bike to ride because the riding style is very similar to what you use in MotoGP.

"The Triumph engine feels closer to a MotoGP bike, it suits me and I didn’t do badly in testing, so I can’t wait to get going again on it!”
