Confidence was at highest in Berlin – Jean-Eric Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne has said that his confidence was at its highest point at last weekend's Berlin E-Prix, with the reigning champion taking a second consecutive podium for DS Techeetah.

At the Flughafen Tempelhof Circuit, Vergne recovered from a poor qualifying performance to finish on the podium, fighting from eighth on the grid to take the chequered flag in third place.

Standing on the final step of the podium, Vergne secured his fourth top-three finish of the season after previously winning the Monaco E-Prix earlier this month, maintaining his lead in the Drivers' Championship.

"I’m feeling very happy! I had a lot of fun in the race," he told Motorsport Week. "It was the race that I enjoyed the most this year and I’m very glad with the result.

"A big thank you to DS Techeetah who changed the whole car on Friday to give me a good one in the race so it was a very good result!"

Examining his race more closely, Vergne implied that a late Full Course Yellow ruined his chances of securing a better result in the German capital, with the pause in racing removing any element of strategy and reducing the need for energy management, paving the way to a flat-out sprint to the line.

As a result of this, Vergne missed out on a potential second place, unable to find a way past Sebastien Buemi who experienced a race of battery management after struggling with the efficiency of his Nissan IM01 in the early stages, aided by the Full Course Yellow.

"There are days where your confidence is at the highest and this was one of those days," he added. "I felt very happy. The Full Course Yellow ruined everything because the race was flat out after that. It didn’t ruin it but I could have got more.”

The European leg of Formula E's fifth season of competition will come to a close at the Bern E-Prix on June 22 ahead of the 2018/19 season finale in New York City in July.
