Nyck De Vries cruises to victory in Spanish sprint race

ART's Nyck De Vries was able to cruise to victory in Barcelona's sprint race to claim his first victory of 2019 after a stunning drive from fourth on the grid.

The Dutchman made a superb start from his grid slot, following the BWT Arden of Anthoine Hubert from the second row – his start was almost too good as he had to pull out of the tow too early and couldn't get passed Hubert into Turn 1.

De Vries bided his time and nailed Hubert once the DRS became active with a move on the inside of Turn 1, he eventually pulled away from Hubert to control the race until the chequered flag.

Ferrari-backed Callum Ilott lost out on the initial start falling behind De Vries and Hubert, but the British driver was able to recover and get back passed to claim his first F2 podium.

Ex-F1 driver delivers blunt Fernando Alonso verdict: ‘His moment has passed’

UNI-Virtuosi's Luca Ghiotto once again showcased his raw pace this season, the Italian had a poor getaway and had to work hard to claw his way back through the field. As he did he passed his rivals with relative ease – often in places you wouldn't normally see overtaking – he would eventually make his way onto the podium passing Hubert on lap 17, putting himself firmly in the title hunt.

Hubert was unable to hold onto the leaders and continued to slip back whilst Guanyu Zhou was able to pressure the Frenchman for fourth place and passed him with just a handful of laps remaining to cross the line in fifth.

Feature race winner Nicholas Latifi also suffered a poor getaway and lost ground in the opening stages of the race, he was able to push his way back in contention for a decent haul of points, the Canadian had to settle for sixth place.

Jordan King showed good pace to start with but was unable to keep that up as he slipped back as the laps unfolded, bringing his MP Motorsport car home in seventh. King's next race will be in IndyCar for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 later this month.

Jack Aitken would be the final point scorer in eighth-place. The Renault-backed driver got into a battle with Prema's Mick Schumacher and made contact with the German's car in the final laps and forced him wide. Schumacher would be handed a five-second time penalty for failing to go to the left of the bollard on the exit of Turn 2, allowing Aitken to keep the place.

Sean Gelael and Ralph Boschung once again rounded out the top 10.

There was a scare for Carlin's Nobuhara Matsushita on the opening lap of the race after his car burst into flames which brought out the Safety Car. The Japanese driver quickly made it out of the car unscathed, but his Carlin was destroyed in the incident.

Formula 2 will return to action in Monaco on May 24-26.
