Jean-Eric Vergne will start from pole position for the Monaco E-Prix, with a three-place grid penalty for Oliver Rowland handing the reigning Formula E champion the top spot in qualifying.

The DS Techeetah driver completed his initial qualifying run in Group Two, lapping the 1.76km-long Monaco circuit in 50.048s to set the fastest time in the group qualifying stages, securing a place inside the Super Pole shootout.

Fronting Super Pole, Vergne was joined by Pascal Wehrlein, Felipe Massa, Sebastien Buemi, Rowland and Mitch Evans who completed the top six.

As the slowest of the top six runners, Evans opened up proceedings in Super Pole by posting a pacy 50.112s run to take provisional pole position although this was quickly dismissed by Rowland, the Briton beating the Kiwi's lap by 0.091s.

Looking to maintain his 100% Formula E record around Monaco, Buemi was the third runner, however, was unable to match the pace of his Nissan e.dams team-mate, settling into third with the slowest time of the session so far, 0.213s off the pace.

Like Buemi, Venturi's Massa also failed to challenge Rowland, 0.197s slower than the provisional polesitter while Wehrlein emulated Massa's performance by setting the third fastest time.

With Rowland sitting on a three-place grid penalty from the Paris E-Prix, the fight for pole position was between the second-placed Evans and Vergne who was still to complete his lap.

Securing a competitive run, despite ending up 0.021s slower than Rowland, Vergne settled into second place and therefore inherited pole position, with Evans joining the Frenchman on the front row of the grid for the ninth round of the 2018/19 campaign.

Wehrlein, while qualifying in fourth, was in turn promoted to third while Rowland settled into fourth to complete the second row of the grid, fronting a 4-6 qualifying result for Nissan e.dams with Massa splitting Rowland and Buemi.

Outside of Super Pole, Alexander Sims continued to outpace Antonio Felix da Costa at BMW by qualifying in seventh place while his team-mate was ninth, the pair separated by Alex Lynn in the second Jaguar who qualified in eighth. Jose Maria Lopez completed the top 10 for GEOX Dragon.

Stoffel Vandoorne was 0.019s shy of the top 10 for HWA Racelab with the 11th fastest time while Robin Frijns emerged as the fastest Envision Virgin Racing driver with team-mate Sam Bird only managing 15th.

Lucas di Grassi was 13th in what was another difficult qualifying session for Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler while second-placed championship man Andre Lotterer set the slowest time in qualifying in the second DS Techeetah, however, will start from 21st due to a penalty for Edoardo Mortara.

The Monaco E-Prix will commence at 16:33 local time.
